Alkali-Resistant (AR) glass fiber strand is a specialized glass reinforcement containing at least 16% to 19% zirconium oxide (ZrO₂), engineered specifically to withstand the aggressive, high-pH alkaline environment of wet cement.
Key Properties & Specifications of AR-GLASS FIBER
- Zirconium Content: Minimum 16%–19% ZrO₂ to protect against alkali corrosion.
- Fiber Lengths: Commonly available in 1/2″ (13 mm) and 3/4″ (19 mm) cut length.
- Filament Structure: Consists of fine filaments (approx. 18 microns in diameter) grouped into strand bundles held together with a water-soluble or compatible sizing.
- Corrosion Resistance: Does not rust or corrode like steel reinforcement.
Why Use AR Glass Fiber in Concrete?
-
- High Tensile & Flexural Strength: Significantly boosts ductility and allows concrete to flex up to 2–3 times more than plain concrete.
- Crack Control: Minimizes plastic shrinkage and thermal cracking
- Thinner, Lighter Sections: Enables the creation of lightweight precast elements and thin-walled structures where traditional steel rebar is hard to fit.
- Primary Component in GFRC: Serves as the core reinforcement in Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) premix and spray-up applications.
Common Applications of AR-GLASS FIBER
- Concrete Counter-tops & Sinks: Allows detailed edges and slim profiles.
- Architectural Wall Panels & Facades: Reduces dead load on building structures.
- Precast & Decorative Elements: Fireplace surrounds, planters, furniture, and custom cladding.
- Overlays & Repair Mortars: Enhance surface toughness and crack resistance.
